If your character lived in the modern world, what job would they have? Or, if your character already exists in the modern world, who would they have been in medieval times?

Going with my current writing WIP: -Rinna would be a librarian or English teacher and write novels on the side, hoping she'd eventually be able to do it full time. (Well, actually, she'd be a student, because she's still a little younger than I am, but if she had a job . . . yeah.) -Arix would be either a trail guide or in the military. -Sarah, who lives in the modern world, would've (if she could have any job) been either a bard or a scribe.

I dunno why I came back. I'm supposed to hate this place. For the past six years I've done nothing but browbeat the old mansion, yet here I am on the front porch. The gate yields after a gentle push. Honestly, it's just there for show. Mom felt powerful carrying the keys--she needed something to open and shut. In my mind's eye, she still prowls through the courtyard. Her back is straight. Her arms are short and thin, like needles, sleeved in a frosty robe. I stare. She stares. We both turn away. I've seen all I need to see. ______

Using the cast of Between Two Worlds: ---------- "Any sign of them?"
I peer past the corner, my senses heightened by adrenaline and fear. The empty street, stained and littered with the marks of death and dying, stretches in either direction. "No sign." I step out, my sword held ready in case any foes should appear. As an extra precaution, I draw the prestored energy from one of the stones in my bag and hold it, ready to expel it in an explosion or a shield.
Aedon and Jarek follow. Jarek scowls at the buildings surrounding us. "I don't like this. Shouldn't we have seen one of those monsters by now?"
I cringe, heading down the street. "Don't call them monsters. They were people, after all."
"Were being the operative word." Jarek fingers the pistol at his side, loaned to him by my dad. All three of us carry one, though it's not a usual weapon for any of us. With the effects of the plague dampening the available magical energy, the extra firepower is welcome. "Even you can't deny they're unnatural, kitten."
He's right. They are unnatural- more so because I can't sense them. Any living thing, I can sense through the energy it gives off- but not these. They might as well be invisible.
Sounds from ahead and to the left catch my ear. "Something- do you hear it?" I whisper.
Jarek nods, moving ahead. "I hear it."
We proceed carefully. A new whisper of energy swirls past me- a living person. But the sounds . . . I have no doubt that he or she's the only being in that alley. As we reach the corner, we stop and peer around. A young woman crouches on a pile of boxes, unable to go higher or further. Blood drips from a cut on her ankle- a straight, clean slice, thankfully. Not a bite. If it were a bite, we'd be able to do nothing for her. All the same, it's probably infected, and undoubtedly in need of care.
More pressing is the crowd of bodies around her pile, mouldering, decaying things, with grey flesh and exposed bones, clothing rotting away, flies hovering about. Zombies. A foe I'd never dreamed I'd face until a month ago. They reach and grab for her, but can't quite reach her. They can't climb- but I can't help wondering how long it'll be before enough fall down and are crushed and create a ramp for their companions.
I consider drawing in the energy of a second stone, but . . . no. Better to hold off. "Ready?" I ask, quietly.
"Ready." Jarek nods. "Meadhra?"
"On my count," Aedon takes a deep breath. "Three . . . two . . . one . . .
"Now."
Jarek and I act at once, throwing energy balls at two separate points in the crowd of zombies. Many fall, blown to bits. The others turn towards us- too many of them still alive for comfort. I draw out the energy of two more stones and expell it in smaller bursts, felling the zombies in ones and twos. The rest advance towards us, their gate slow and shuffling.
Aedon and Jarek are circling round to the sides. When I have enough energy for only three more balls remaining, I signal and they move in behind the zombies, cutting off decaying heads with swift slices. I expel my last three energy balls before darting in to help. A few minutes later and all that's left is bodies- but bodies that will need to be disposed of quickly. I draw out the energy of a fourth stone, use some of it to burn the zombie blood off my sword. Then I sheath my blade and go help the young woman off the boxes. "You're all right? Not bitten or anything?"
She nods, shakily stepping down. "You're- you're Aralins, aren't you? You came because of the treaty?"
"Yes." And also because this is my homeland, whether or not it's still my home, but she doesn't need to know that- people's memories of Katelyn Shadowwalker are still too strong. "We're going to take you to Aralin, all right? You'll be safe there, and once all this is over, you can come home." If it's over, that is. From what I can tell, there doesn't seem to be much hope of that. Everywhere, the zombie plague lurks, waiting.
The woman nods, smiling weakly. "Yes- thank you."
"You're welcome." I turn to Aedon and Jarek, who are burning the debris from the battle. "Almost done?"
"Nearly." Jarek sets another body alight. "Set up the portal."
"Got it." I pull a portal stone from my pocket and set it on the ground at the base of the back wall of the alley. I awaken the portal with a jolt of energy from what I have left, then use the rest to anchor the portal to the wall. This done, I can pick the stone back up and tuck it in my pocket so that, once we're through, it can be reused. "I'm going to take her through awhile."
Aedon comes up behind me. "We're ready. Go on."
I nod and guide the young woman through the portal. Another survivor rescued from zombie-ridden Earth. I pray with all my heart that she won't be the last. ----- Edit: I'll take a truth. You? Truth or dare?

Poor characters indeed. Thanks! I liked yours as well! For Katelyn, it would be insects/bugs/etc. She's a magic-weilding former assassin, but she's still scared of anything with an exoskeleton and more than four legs. For Rinna, it would be . . . I'm not sure. Most of her fears, she has a reason behind them. I guess maybe protagonist-dom, because she's been assured that it's not always as bad as it's historically been in her world, but she doesn't believe those assurances? If your character(s) found out the world was going to end at sunset and there was nothing he/she/they could to do stop it, what would he/she/they do with his/her/their remaining time?

Thanks!
Lol. I feel your pain, Katelyn. *shudders*
Hmm. Good question. I think Essa would try to cram as much life as she could into her remaining time, exploring, hunting, partying with the others. When the last few hour came, though, she'd break down and panic. It wouldn't be pretty. Naina, on the other hand, would be secretly relieved. I imagine her sitting on the roof with a massive bowl of ice cream, watching the sun set.

Not the antagonist, but one of her subordinates, because that's what works: ------ I leap lightly from the rooftop to the ground, cushioning my fall with a downwards energy push. I turn, trying to get my bearings. It's been a while since I've walked the streets of Aralin, and in the dark everything looks different.
Behind me, I hear the hiss of steel being drawn from a scabbard. "Put your hands up, shadowwalker, and turn around slowly, or you'll feel the sting of my blade."
I freeze, then obey. "I'm not a shadowwalker."
The man- one of some noble's personal soldiers, I realize- keeps his blade pointed at me. "I'm no fool, shadowwalker. I know your colors, and I've fought enough of your kind to protect my lord. Killed enough as well. If you don't want to join that number, I suggest you do as I say and walk slowly where I tell you to."
I sigh. "I'll go where you ask, but I'm no shaddowwalker." Not anymore. "My name is Katelyn Stevens, and I'm embedded in the Shadowwalkers as a spy. I serve Duke Meadhra really- ask anyone." I pray he'll believe me, that he'll recognize my name. Otherwise, well, I'll have a whole lot of explaining to do when I return to my spying position, and that's the last thing I need.

What's the most selfish thing your character has ever done?

|
Post by Leilani Sunblade on May 7, 2015 12:49:49 GMT
Rinna- Hmm. Her refusal to get an apprenticeship or think about marriage in favor of continuing to try for a position in the Order of the Pen could be considered fairly selfish, as it means she's putting more pressure on her parents.
Sarah- Probably setting herself up as a prominent character in her own story. xD Dragging Rinna out on a quest probably counts too. xD

*nods* *chugs coffee* O.o It's not too bad, though, because I love my coworkers. I love the guests too (or at least most of them). It's so much fun getting people situated with their meal and surprising them with great service. :P
Ah, man, that's a hard one. Honestly, I'm not sure. Naina maybe? She'd be easy to get along with. Essa would be fun to freak out with, but she'd make a mess.

This could take some time. In the meantime, truth or dare for you? ------ Edit: --- Kendrick balanced on a step-stool, precariously perched as he pinned up the brightly colored birthday banner. He swayed and nearly fell before he'd pushed in the last tack in place, but made it back to the ground safely. He eyed it, trying to decide if it was crooked or not- he didn't want to go back on that stepstool, but a crooked banner would be unthinkable for this party. This whole business would be a lot easier if he was an Author of this world, not just Udarean. He sighed. Ah well. Undoubtedly it was some way of "keeping him humble". As if he needed any help with that. Thoughts of Udarean and his position as Author brought to mind that other Author- the new girl, the one who couldn't leave well enough alone, who wouldn't recognize an good plot, let alone an epic, if it hit her in the face. How she'd been found worthy of the position was beyond him. The forest will deal with her. After all, if she "died" while in Udarean, she'd lose her Author powers and be stuck permanently in one of the two worlds- which he wasn't sure. He supposed it was a bit of a harsh fate, but she'd still be able to write as she had before. Maybe she could regain her position once she knew something more of what she was doing. And in any case, she should've known better than to involve herself in things beyond her ken. A grandfather clock in the hall rang out two o'clock, the second chime mingling with the ringing of the doorbell. Kendrick hastily picked up the stepstool and carried it out to the hall before going to answer the door. That would be the first of the guests for his friend's birthday party. All but the guest of honor had been instructed to come early so they could make everything ready; it was to be a surprise for the friend whose birthday they were celebrating. As he pulled the door open and greeted the couple who'd arrived, Kendrick shoved all thoughts of Udarean from his mind. He had a party to throw.
