Hi. Anyone want to win some bookish merch? bit.ly/2sK1Jj7 Also, more on topic, has anyone read the Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman?

No, but I searched for it on my library catalogue yesterday and would have placed a hold if it had been there.

Dmitri Pendragon: Awwwww. That stinks that your library doesn't have it. It's an awesome series. jliessa44: You should check it out. It's a pretty awesome series involving alternate worlds, a magical Library that connects multiple worlds, heistyness, dragons, steampunkery, marvelously dramatic villains, a bookworm-spy protagonist, and all sorts of fabulous. I love it. (I'm also a bit frustrated because I just finished the third book and the second one doesn't come out until January and I don't want to wait.)

jliessa44: I've heard a lot about it. Mostly from Leilani on Goodreads. XD Leilani Sunblade: My library does have a recommend feature.

I'll look into it. I'm hoping to read more this summer. And I want to make sure I've nearly hit my goal of 17 books in '17 before the beginning of next semester. It's an easy goal, but I've been struggling to find time lately.

Dmitri Pendragon: What's the point of Goodreads if you can't squee about amazing books? 0=D And good, recommend it very heavily. jliessa44: Cool. These are fairly quick reads, at least for me; they're about the same length as the Knight and Rogue books. How's the 17 in 17 goal going, BTW?

I've read eight or nine. I forget which. But I'm only counting novels that I read for fun so I've technically read more.
ETA. My library has the first one at least, so I'll see if I can get in to check it out.

Makes sense. School reading is sometimes enjoyable, but it's not the same as reading for fun.
Awesome! I hope you can read it; let me know what you think!

Exactly. And I don't really do New Years resolutions, but my main goal his year is to keep from getting stressed out and reading is one of the ways I'm doing it. Plus it's been soooooo long (since like the beginning of highschool) since I've been able to just read.

Yeah. I'll probably do that. My account needed renewed so I wasn't able to before.
I got:
Enchanted by Althea Kontis, which I think you'd really like if you haven't read it. It's a fairytale retelling and it includes nearly every fairytale under the sun. Once or twice it feels like a bit too much, but I really liked it and it was a quick read. I read it last night in a few hours. There are two other books, the first one is about Sunday (which is all I've read) and the second is about her sister Saturday. And then there's a companion, but I'm not sure what it's about. Enchanted is mostly about the princess and the frog with Jack and the beanstalk with a good bit of Cinderella.
Mark of the thief by Jennifer A. Nielsen which I don't know much about other than it appears to be set in Rome? Idk. I think I'm going to read it next because the blurb looked good.
Rogues Home and Players Ruse by Hilari Bell because I'm doing a read through and those are the two I don't own. Which is awful because Rogues home is my favorite. Players Ruse used to be my least favorite, but I've only read it once before the others came out. So I'm interested to see how it stacks up this time.
Heart of Betrayal and the Beauty of Darkness by Mary Pearson because I got the first book really cheap somewhere and I was interested to read the rest of the series. However, I'm not quite as interested in these. :/ We'll see.

I've read Alethea Kontis's books- well, some of them. I read Enchanted, Hero, and Dearest; I didn't read the companion. I've actually met the author; she used to live in my area and did a book signing and a writers' workshop at my local library.
I've heard of Mark of the Thief, but I think I read a bad review so I didn't read it.
Yay, Knight and Rogue books! I own all the books except Players' Ruse now; I still need to find that one somewhere . . .
I haven't heard of the last two; let me know how you like them. What are they about, since you said you read the first book?

Ooh. Wow. That's cool. ^.^ Did you like the others? I was thinking about reading them. Though I didn't know there was another. My library only had the three I mentioned.
Oh dear. Lol. I'd ask what it said, but I also don't want to influence myself beforehand.
I don't have a favorite series, but I do have a favorite top three and they're one of them.
I don't remember a whole lot about the first book, which is why I'm already iffy on the next two. But from what I remember it was pretty enjoyable, just kinda generic? A princess runs away from an arranged marriage after stealing secret documents from her father's advisor and her father sends bounty hunters after her. There's a love triangle, but with a twist. One is the assassin and the other is the prince. And if I remember right you don't know which is which for a large part of the book. But I could be remembering wrong there. It was worth what I paid for it, but I'm not sure if I'd buy it new, if you know what I mean. My biggest problem was the worldbuilding. I just didn't care much for the world it was set it. It had good specific details sometimes and then other parts just seemed like a void. And nowadays I prefer fantasy worlds with a Edwardian/Victorian/1920s feel to them.

I liked Enchanted. Hero was ok. Dearest was . . . kind of weird, and it got more into the elements of their religion, and yeah. I'm not sure what I think about it. Definitely not one of my favorite books, though.
Heh. I don't remember a lot about what I said, so.
Ah. Sounds like it could be ok, but probably not something I'm going to run out and look up immediately.

Ah okay. I'm not sure I'll read them then. It was a little dark for my tastes and I got confused in some parts of Rumbold's.
Yeah. Like if you want something easy and it's in the library I would grab it, but I wouldn't straight out buy it or go out of my way to get it.

I will agree that some parts of his POV were like "What the pumpernickel is going on here?" The fact that he was confused himself a lot of the time didn't help. Got it. Thanks.

Haha. Exactly. And I prefer when there's confusion I'm at least not confused about what we're confused about.

Random question for everyone: What book have you reread the most?
|
|
|
Post by jliessa44 on Jun 30, 2017 22:16:18 GMT
LOTR trilogy clocks in first because I was kinda obsessive about it for a year.
Then Rogue's Home takes second, even though I don't own it and really I should.
And then Demon King from the Seven Realms novels. I liked the whole series, but the later books kinda lacked what I loved most about the series.

I'm going to guess either Heartless or Howl's Moving Castle. I don't know for sure, but I've read/listened to Howl a lot, and I know I've read Heartless a bunch of times.

LOTR probably. Or maybe Narnia. When I was younger I used to read them a lot.

I read reference books the most. Like, these young reader encyclopedias on dinosaurs, insects, snakes, all those cool boy things. Read them dozens of times, and somehow I still remember pacycephalosaurs and the life cycles of cicadas and the venomous gaboon vipers.

Dude that's actually super awesome. I think the book I've reread the most is probably The Horse and His Boy. Though I haven't read it in years. I know I read it over and over when I was younger, and I don't know of any other book for which I've done that. Except maybe Septimus Heap: Magic.
