NightBlade: Butterfly knives are really cool too. Fun to watch people do all the tricks with them. Too bad we don't live anywhere near each other haha, it'd be fun to spar and stuff. Cuz I need to get better at fighting just in case lol.

Nice.
If you were fighting an opponent with a longsword, what would be your blade of choice?

Katanas have no crossguard. You're hands are going to get shredded.

They have a guard. Its just not a cross-tree style.

Well, yes, but it's not going to do a whole lot of good.

It does what you need it to, which is stop a blade from sliding down to your hand.

That's only if you keep the blades connected the whole way down, though, right? If they separated even a little the longsword could come right down on you and there goes your hand.

It coullllllld ish. But once you're out of the lock (blades in contact) then that shouldn't ever happen. It's hard to explain but the way you come out of a lock at an angle so it goes off to the side. Mmmrrrf...this is hard...you just kinda gotta do it

Yeah. It works out. The katana is a fantastic weapon. Flexible, strong, and holds an edge like no other

Why is that? The edge-holding properties?

The steel composition using carbon and the way they worked it by folding the steel was amazing for that time

Yeah, but nothing beats damascus steel.

Heh. It's coming back into popularity. Wootz steel was pretty amazing. I think it was even stronger if I remember

The modern damascus steel is actually not the same kind they used to make several centuries ago. You know how blacksmiths can be - they try to keep their smithing techniques a secret. Somewhere along the line the technique was lost. The damascus steel we now know of is actually a reversed engineered steel made from the study of surviving blades. Not as good as it was though, or so I've heard. :/
I've heard of wootz steel, but I have no idea what it is. It's got a wacky name, that's for sure.
Also, shifting subjects a bit, have you heard of "the Snake in the Blade", used when referencing Norse swords? I totally want one...

What's that?

|
|
Post by Warrior of Aror on Aug 28, 2015 20:25:12 GMT
Well, the definition is slightly ambiguous. But most people think that it's the pattern that runs up the spine of the blade. When you breath on it, revealing the texture, it looks like a snake. Mentioned it at least once in Beowulf.

I believe the Serpent in the Blade was early pattern welding, if I recall. Dated back to Celtic times, surprisingly advanced.
Some researchers believe they have found the secret of Damascus steel, or at least close to it. It is narrowed down to quenching techniques. Heheh--some of which are very....interesting.
Wootz steel is an ancient Indian technique that is very similar to Damascus steel. Very high quality

Yeah, I heard the same things about the Serpent in the Sword.
Hm. Very interesting.

Cased telescoped ammo is the future peeps. More economical, less weight, allows a shorter bolt travel for higher cyclic rates and less recoil!
