"Lemme go." Aine pulled her shoulder back, frowning at Merlin. "Just 'cause ya bought a paper doesn't mean I owe ya."

"Eh no. But I know this isn't something you wanna get in." Merlin glanced at the others. "Trust me, love."

Jack turned around when he heard Aine telling someone off. There was some Italian man tugging at her shoulder to come away from the chaos in the streets. "Hey! Shove off, will'ya?" Jack said as he gave the man a stern gaze.

"Good for you so do we." Malachi grinned and then glanced at Daze with a small frown. "Well, some of us. Anyway, if you guarantee us further patronage we'll give you half now for two, and half later for three." "Done." A smile tugged at Madeline's lips. She finally relaxed, and let it bloom. "Now then. If you'd be so kind as to drop me in town--" Sirens keened like unrestful spirits. The fuzz? Already? Must've gotten the plates from a witness. Or followed a trail of people who remembered a speeding car that matched their description. Madeline whipped around, peering out the back window. Sure enough, a battered patrol car was zooming toward their position. _________________ "So Mike. What'cha think?" Inspector Jon Likely gripped the steering wheel, eyes fixed on the suspect car before him. "Should we report this to the boss or deal with it ourselves?"

Oscar looked at the hand for a moment, then back at Milton's face as he finished talking. Then, after a second longer, he took the hand and held it firmly--not actually shaking it--all the while keeping his intense gaze fixed on Harvey. "You'll have a job." Milton grasped the hand tightly. "I'll not let you down, boss." He met Oscar's gaze and let go. Inside, however, he was smiling broadly. Oscar T didn't know the man he'd just taken so quickly into his service. Milton wasn't just going to leave his gang to serve a rival leader. No. Instead, he'd find out all he could while working for Oscar, then he'd go back and tell his boss. Milton's inward smile broadened while his face stayed stoic. Al Dillenger would then have all he needed to know to wipe out Oscar T. And with Milton working for both Oscar and Al, there was sure to be some good pay in it for him--especially the reward he'd get for betraying Oscar. Still grinning inside, Milton spoke. "So, boss, what's what's the plan? We gonna get those bootleggers?" Getting rid of the two who had been supplying the speakeasy would be another added bonus. ((Al Dillenger is the boss who Milton is really working for, and I may make a character up for him, or someone else could if they feel like jumping in. ))

Michael Cod popped a straw in his mouth, taking a long sip from his beet juice.
"Why bother the boss at this hour?" he spoke around the straw, giving Jon a cunning wink, "after all, why deprive him of his nap time?"

Merlin threw his hands in the air. "Women. Very well then, get yourself kilt listenin' to a murder plan."
Then he began to make his way out back to Madoc's speakeasy. If he didn't make it back in time, the man would take it out on Harlow. ------------- Malachi swore again, before crossing himself with a prayer for forgiveness. "I don't suppose we could start the car without looking guilty?"

Aine waited a moment, then followed, clutching her bundle of papers against her chest. If they brought in a story about Oscar T.—they could get paid. Paid a lot! Enough cash to get some new duds for us both. And food.

Jack stayed close to the brick wall, slowly making his way closer. Jack was almost within hearing distance from the two when he tripped on a small metal bucket that had been left in the middle of the walkway, hidden in plain sight. The noise rang through the streets and Jack cursed silently. No way someone could have not heard that. ((Now we wait for NightBlade or Aviar Goldeneagle to react.))

There was the abrupt scuff of feet stopping behind the kids, followed by two dry clicks and a man's voice. "How boutchu kids turn around and put up yer hands."
Oscar jabbed a thumb over his shoulder. "We'll see. My best boys are spending the night on the town after roughing up some other gang. So you're going to find out where these two came from." He gestured at the bodies of the two thugs.

Two dark-clad men stood behind the newsies, the one in front inserting a long stick magazine into his Thompson submachinegun. "Reggie. Get Mista T." He said, not taking his eyes off the kids.

A dozen well-prepared excuses fled from Aine's mind when she saw the gun, and the skin of her face went white under the dirt. If they shoot...Jack might be able to get away...then you'd be dead, genius. That ain't gonna help ya.

When the man raised his gun, Jack's heart skipped a beat. "Whoa, whoa! Stop waving that dang gun around," he said out of frustration, but almost immediately regretted saying anything. This man had no reason not to put him out of his misery right now. Calm down. Gotta play it safe.

A looked up as a loud, metallic clang suddenly sounded from across the street. Turning, he saw two teens, each with a man behind them. Both the men held guns aimed right at the two who Milton recognised as newsies. He raised an eyebrow and looked back at Oscar T questionably.

"You come back here, and [I'll[/I] find you." Oscar instructed, then turned to survey the situation. Those were his boys. "Ah, now what..." Oscar strode over towards the captive children, surveying them questioningly. "Wot's this all about?"

Aine took a deep breath as Oscar came up, then decided that she didn't really have anything to lose. "This 'ere's our corner," she said, her voice firm even though she felt like falling to her knees. Dean hunched over the bar, staring into his tonic and gin, as though it held the secrets of the universe. I don’t need this. But he drank it anyway. His head was pleasantly warm and pressurized. Father Carey's going to burst a blood vessel... but Dean ordered another drink.

"How good are you at lying?" Malachi started up the car, and pressed the pedal to the floor as he took off at 30 mph. ---------- Merlin strolled down the street, hands in his empty pockets. After having talked to the kids, he'd switched his money to a thief's carry. --------- "Hon, you best be careful. Don't want you keeling over." Harlow set the drink he ordered down in front of him, leaning forward on the counter. "It's rather early to get drunk."

She grabbed the back of Daze's seat, braced for impact. _________ "Cripes!" Jonathan gunned the patrol car. "Michael, they're on the run." At least this was taking place on the fringe of the city, otherwise there would be no hiding from the chief.

"Mmhm." Harlow gave him a faint smile. "Cops'll go by that I'm sure." ---------- "Not really sure. Buying time I suppose." Malachi shrugged and made a u turn to head back into the city. "Now our story is we's been attacked by three hangmen and we escaped in their car when they were set on by another gang. Fair enough?"
"Then why are we running from them?" Daze turned to look back.
Malachi tilted his head. "Eh. We panicked? Never can tell who's on whose payroll. Plus I hope to lose them."
