((@mikul: I don't mind.))
Liam chuckled quietly. "Poor fellow." He was silent for a few moments. "Let me see . . . shortly after I was knighted, I happened across a small town wherein several of the children had gone missing. I offered to seek them out, and the townsfolk readily accepted my services. After some investigation, I learned of another young man, a few years older than me, who had been seen snooping about the homes of the missing children before they vanished. I attempted to confront him, but 'twas no use- he always managed to evade me. However, I had managed to predict where the villain 'twould likely strike next, and so I laid an ambush for him. Near midnight that night, I spotted the fellow climbing in a window of the house, and immediately leapt from my hiding place to catch him." Liam paused dramatically. ------ "Ah." Kenneth glanced around. "Are they near?" He rather doubted it- but as his other suspicions were that this girl, though ordinary in appearance, was magical or that her family was dead and this was a song of morning, he thought it better to be circumspect.

(Frest: I'm cool with that)
The girl shook her head, gazing off over Kenneth's shoulder. "Nay. They are far away, far, far away..."

(Thanks! I will brainstorm an entrance. It might be a bit of a strange addition to the group, though.)

Vala sucked in a breath. "W-what happened next? Did you catch him?"

As I expected. Kenneth nodded again. "Are you in need of aid? Perhaps help returning to them?" ----- "Aye, I did- only for him to twist in my grasp and strike me in the eye." Liam winced at the memory. "We both fell to the ground, and a brief scuffle ensued- but as I was stronger, it ended with me on top. I demanded he tell me what he'd done with the children he'd taken, but he denied having anything to do with the disappearances and said that he, like I myself, was trying to stop them and rescue the children. Naturally, I was inclined to disbelieve him, but he challenged me to look in the child's room and see for myself if the lad was still there." Liam sighed. "Alas, he was not- though I was still unconvinced that Caid- the man in question- had not been working with an accomplice. We agreed to attempt working together to find the missing children, partially that our efforts might have greater success and partially so I could keep an eye on Caid."

The girl shook her head, displacing some of her tangled hair to fall in front of her eyes. "I cannot return to them."

Dead, then, most likely. Unless she was an outcast from wherever her family lived- that was certainly a possibility as well, Kenneth supposed. "Still, do you need aid?"

She looked down demurely. "No sir...but thank you." She spoke with surety, yet with that ever-present melancholy quietness. She glanced up at him again for a moment. "Where is it that you travel?"

Vala watched Liam with wide-eyes, looking almost like a tiny child would on the knee of her grandfather. "Did you find the children?" She asked in a hushed tone.

Kenneth raised an eyebrow slightly. "Is there a reason you need to know?" ---- ((Edit:))
"We did." Liam nodded. "'Twas Caid who figured it out in the end- they'd been kidnapped by a wandering tribe camped some distance from the town. Once we were certain the children were indeed there, we gathered the men of the town and demanded that the kidnapped children be returned. Sadly, the kidnappers resisted- but we won the battle in the end." He smiled faintly. "And by then, Caid and I had become friends of a sort. He wished to leave the town in search of a greater life- not unlike you, I believe- and we traveled together for some time."

((@wookieelf: I have edited Liam's reply into my previous post. Sorry for missing your post at first.))
Kenneth felt a slight pang of guilt- perhaps that had been too blunt. Linnea did often accuse him of putting things too sharply. "I mean no offense, but we are, after all, strangers to each other."

The girl shook her head quickly, in contrast to her normally slow and deliberate manner. "Tis fine. I am a stranger."
(I'll edit in her profile real quick. Just check back in like 5 minutes)
-Name: Kealade (KEE-el-aide) -Race, Gender, Age: human female, young adult age (17-20) -Appearance: Kealade is on the shorter end of middle height, or about 5'6", and slender framed. She has dirty (both literally and figuratively) blonde hair that falls past her shoulders in unkempt tangles, and sad, soulful grey-green eyes. Her face, underneath the stains of dirt, is lean but still attractive. She carries herself with a posture of quiet humility, and her every movement and word is rather slow and deliberate as if she is never in a rush, or her mind is always elsewhere. -Armor/Clothing: Woodland-soiled linen skirt and a tattered skin cloak to keep the cold off her back. She wears a distinctly military belt with slightly tarnished iron studdings. -Weapons/Equipment: No weapon or tool to speak of, as far as as can be seen. -Personality: Kealade is very quiet, almost hauntingly quiet. And indeed, she does seem haunted and always in a state of silent reflection. She is, however, kind and selfless enough. -History: Kealade has spoken hardly a word of her past, and it is no doubt a strange and woeful tale she would like no better than to forget.

Kenneth eyed the girl for several long moments. The logical thing to do at this point, he suspected, would be to walk away. She said she needed no help, and there was no real reason for him to remain. However, he had a feeling that he should stay- after all, this sort of meeting didn't just happen for no reason. He shifted uncomfortably, now half-wishing he had brought Linnea along, if only so he could get her thoughts on the matter. "Are you in search of someone to travel with? If you are, two other near-strangers have already joined my sister and me; one more will make little difference."

(Sorry. Turned out out be more than 5 minutes....)
The girl's eyes, previously fixed quietly at her feet, climbed back up to meet Kenneth's. "If t'would not a bother to you, then a journey and companions would not be amiss"

(('Tis perfectly fine.))
"Very well, then." Kenneth offered his hand. "So long as my sister and other companions agree, which they likely will, you may join us- on the condition that you tell me your name so we're not complete strangers."

"Caid sounds like a boy I knew, a long time ago." Vala said absently, her mind elsewhere. "Rascal of a boy, but, when put in a situation, he had a heart of gold. He ran off to be a juggler in a circus, I think." She smiled fondly at the memory, then brought herself back to the present with a shake of her head. "Still, I am glad to hear the children were returned safely."

They rejoined the others a few minutes later. Kenneth waved a hand towards Kealade. "This is Kealade. She wishes to join our group; I said she might if the rest of you were willing to have her."
"As far as I'm concerned, she's welcome to join us." Linnea smiled at the newcomer. "I'm Linnea, Kenneth's sister. He didn't scare you or anything, did he?" --------- "A rascal with a heart of gold. Aye, that describes Caid perfectly." Liam sighed quietly, then seemed to shake away his almost-wistful mood. "Have you another story of your life that you could share, Miss Vala?"

Linnea nodded agreeably. "All right then." As rapidly as a hummingbird changing direction, she switched to a new topic. "We heard you singing earlier- you have a beautiful voice."

" Beautiful? Boy, is that an understatement." Mart grinned at Kealade, delighted at the prospect of a new companion. "You've got a voice like honey dripping off a comb. Way better'n Elevie or I, although I daresay I'm purty good with my ole gemshorn. We should play something together sometime." Elevie put a hand on Mart's shoulder--a nonverbal warning. This strange new girl didn't seem particularly chatty, and might be easy to offend. ((I'm changing Mart's instrument of choice to a gemshorn, which is a medieval flute made out of an ox horn. You can see it here: www.music.iastate.edu/antiqua/gemshorn.htm and listen to it here: www.music.iastate.edu/antiqua/mp3/Musica_Antiqua_ach_lieb_ich_muss.mp3 ))
