Esmeralda:
Leilani: I read The Selection. I saw it on your blog, and couldn't help myself! Oh. My. Goodness. I'm in torment because The Elite is checked out at the library right now. There are only going to be three books right?
Leilani Sunblade:
Coolness! And yes, three books. I read
The One a few days ago and I think it might've been the best in the trilogy. Who do you ship America with, out of curiosity? Maxon or Aspen?
Esmeralda:
MAXON!! *cough* I mean, Maxon. Yes.
Hopefully my library will have The One in by the time I finish Elite.
Jliessa44:
Heh. I personally thing they're one of the best series I've read.... They're for teens/older teens though. So far the romance has been kept very clean, Fisk has had zero romance, and Michael's was puppy love. But there has been some mentioning of things.... So yeah. But it's just minor mentions here and there. Here's the the synopsis for the first book.
The Last Knight by Hilari Bell
"Need a hero?
You've got one in Sir Michael Sevenson.
Although there hasn't been a knight errant in over two hundred years, this young noble has decided to revive the trade. He's found himself a reluctant partner in Fisk, a clever rogue who has been given the choice of serving as Michael's squire or going to jail for a very long time. Now Michael and Fisk are on a quest to right wrongs, protect the innocent, and make the world a happier place.
It's not going to be easy. On their first attempt at rescuing a damsel in distress, they break a lady out of a tower, only to discover that she was there for good reason: awaiting trial for poisoning her husband. Now the would-be heroes must find Lady Ceciel and return her to justice or be condemned themselves. "
It's an enjoyable read, and Fisk is one of my favorite fictional characters ever.
Leilani Sunblade:
Esmerelda: Good! I'm definitely Team Maxon too.
I mean, Aspen is nice, but he's just not right for America. And I hope they do! @liesa: Interesting. I'll look them up.
Jliessa44:
Who would name their character America? Hrm... @leilani. I think you'll like them. They're fantasy, but not like most fantasy.
Leilani Sunblade:
@liessa: Kiera Cass would. It's more appropriate than it sounds, since the story is set in a dystopian-ish, post-U.S.A. setting. I can tell they're not like most fantasy.
It looks like my library has them, so I'll have to check them out when I can.
Jliessa44:
Hmm. Still sounds weird. Though, I think any country name sounds weird. Ooh. Cool. ^.^ my library only had the second and third. So I bought the first a while ago (after reading the middle two like three or four times) and then I finally got the swagbucks Amazon gift card I earned and bought the fourth a few minutes ago.
Leilani Sunblade:
It looks like my library just has three. How recently did the fourth come out?
Jliessa44:
January, February, maybe March. Pretty recent.
Leilani Sunblade:
Got it. Maybe my library just hasn't ordered it yet, then. (Sorry for taking a while to reply, BTW. G2G now.)
Leilani Sunblade:
Wow. No book chat for 3 months? This is sad.
Anyway, has anyone else here read anything by Brandon Sanderson? If not, go look up his books. He is
amazing, incredibly so. Though some people might've gathered that because I've been obsessing over his books most of the past two months. I haven't read all his books, but what I have-
wow. (Mostly. The Alcatraz Smedry book didn't exactly impress me. But the rest was amazing.)
I most recommend the
Mistborn series, particularly the first book (called
The Final Empire). If you don't mind (or like) really big, thick books, the
Stormlight Archive is also incredible. The first in the series is
The Way of Kings. Be warned; it's ten books and there's only two out.
The Rithmatist is the last of his books that I've read, and it's really cool. I don't like it quite as much as the others, but still. It's a gearpunk-fantasy-mystery and I really enjoyed it.
Anyway, that's it. I shall cease the shameless advertising now.
Lady Lessien:
Jake is reading
Mistborn right now. I'm considering making him let me read it when he's done, since he stole my library card to check it out.
Also, did you hear Kiera Cass is writing TWO MORE BOOKS for the Selection series?
? And another novella thing.
Leilani Sunblade:
I'm trying to decide which of your two statements makes me happier. I think the first one actually won. And you should definitely at least ask him if you can read it. It is rather dark, but considering other books I know you've read, I'm pretty sure you can handle it. (All the same, if he says for you to wait, listen.)
More Selection books is awesome, though.
Where'd you hear that?
Lady Lessien:
'Kay. I heard it here:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFkc1iudMVc
Leilani Sunblade:
Ooh. Cool.
Lady Lessien:
Yeah!
Jliessa44:
Anyone know of any books with a main/important secondary character that's a pick pocket, thief, con artist, ruffian, gypsy/Romany or rogue of some sort or another? That are acceptable to read of course.
Leilani Sunblade:
@liessa: I have two series for you! The
Mistborn series I mentioned would probably qualify- both POV characters and most of the secondary characters are thieves or con artists. The
Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner is also really good. As a note, the first book,
The Thief, is a lot lighter than the other three.
Jliessa44:
Ooh. Thank you! I'll look 'em up.
Leilani Sunblade:
You're welcome! Hope you enjoy!
Jag Swiftstorm:
@liessa:
The Charlatan's Boy by Jonathan Rogers would fit that. It's a standalone book so far (a sequel could would fit, but it wouldn't be necessary), but you'd probably enjoy it more if you've read his other trilogy (
The Wilderking Trilogy). They're completely clean, and Christian (
The Charlatan's Boy isn't quite as specifically Christian, as far as I can remember, but it's not anti-Christian or anything).
Elven flet soldier:
Raptor- YES!! the Binding of the Blade is one of my favorite series.
Jliessa:
Okay. Thanks. ^.^
NightBlade the Outcast:
Probably the best writing strategy I could ever give is developing characters on chats or RPs, cause if you develop them enough they just write themselves, it's awesome! I've got characters writing their own stinkin stories faster than I can write!
