Yes, Shakespeare is overrated.

Heh. I actually love me some Shakespeare. I just think it's a funny example of how something being old automatically makes it exceptional.

I don't think it was Shakespeare's goal was to fill plot holes, especially since he was adapting fairy tales and folklore and legend mostly. I think is genius is more in the character interaction and dialogue.
I don't think that a book which doesn't worry about plot holes is necessarily poor, it's just considered as such by our current standards for what "quality" is.

Yes, I agree. Shakespeare's forte was in Drama. He was great at that, and worthy of praise. Perhaps when I study his plays I will gain a greater appreciation for them. But having read MacBeth and Hamlet, I felt rather unsatisfied by them, like I had eaten a whoopie pie without any cream in the middle (I speak from experience).
I'm not fluent in Early Modern English, either. So that's a barrier which perhaps disqualifies me from making any knowledgeable claims. I am learning Middle and Old English though.

FYI: Kendra E. Ardnek just released her latest book, The Worth of a King, and I'm currently screaming all over the internet about it because it's just that good. Y'all should take a look. It's currently only available on Kindle, but the paperback version should be out pretty soon.

It sounds pretty interesting actually; adding it to my list of books to read in the hopefully-near future. When I read the summary about it, I especially liked the idea of the girl being close with the boy who is the son of the "bad guy", I guess. LOL, I don't know what it is; I just like when a pretty nice girl ends up kinda falling for the boy who on the opposite side. It makes things interesting. Also, out of curiosity, Leilani is that you who said that whole review on Amazon?

@inconceivable1: Friend, I don't scream about books all over the internet if they aren't pretty storming good. Better than Sir Batson's books, if you ask me. The basic plot may be fairly similar to other books, but the way Kendra plays it out is excellent and unique. And I love the characters and worldbuilding immensely. TheLostLordofAllyra: There are two reviews on Amazon currently, but I did write the long and overly-excited one, yes. And Delaney and Obsidia are one of my favorite the ships in Kendra's story-verse; they're adorable and I love them. I'm sure you will too as soon as you read it. (Which should be soon, hint-hint.)

Oh wow. It's coming out that soon?
BTW, did anyone read the new editions of the other Sword in the Stars books? And if so, what did you think? Is it worth getting the new versions?

I've been debating getting them, I have yet to read the third (WHICH BTW FINALLY) but I looooovvveeddd the original cover art and I'm mainly just bummed that my copies won't match unless I rebuy them all.
Has anyone read the third installment yet? To be honest I had finished the plot line in my head at this point. Haha

I have read the new editions. I had to force myself to read the new Sword in the Stars—I didn't like some of the changes to the pacing and scenic structure in the early chapters—but once I pushed through the sense of dissonance I liked it much more.
Two new scenes in The Errant King add a depth of symbolism to the story and I would recommend getting the new versions for those scenes.
Reading The Forsaken Continent was a little strange because I had grown accustomed to the story not having a resolution. Sort of like Legends of Karac Tor when the fifth book (The War of Swords) was delayed. I wasn't as impressed as I'd expected—I felt that too much of the setup from books 1 and 2 was brought to a resolution in an underwhelming way. Hopefully this will improve in Mirror of Souls and so on.

Honestly I didn't even realize the third one had come out. This past spring was a rough time for me. I'll have to take a look at it. Maybe I'll get the new versions of them. I don't know yet.
By the way, I've just read my first Brandon Sanderson books this summer in the form of the Reckoners series (well, the first two, anyway). Maybe it's just because I haven't read anything for fun in a long time, but I *really* like these books.

Dmitri Pendragon: Good to know. I guess I'll probably get them when I have money to spare, then. Ellron Silvertree: Whoot! I'm glad you enjoyed them! The Reckkoners are pretty great.

I might just be out of the loop, but I haven't heard anything from Sir Batson un ages. I didn't even know book 3 was out. That reminds me, I still have to read his mini pirate adventure special thing. Anyone else have book recommendations? I expect I'll be finished with the Reckoners soon.

Sir Batson seems to have given up most communication beyond his facebook page. I try to keep updated with it as much as I can. Sometimes his beach pictures and teacher's memes drown out the book news, alas. I finished reading Stardust by Neil Gaiman a few weekends ago. Quite good. Unique entertainment in the modern fantasy genre. Next I'm reading Gawain and the Green Knight (Tolkien translation) and then As You Wish by Cary Elwes. Before too long I hope to snatch a copy of Howl's Moving Castle.
EDIT: Sir Batson seems to proportionally decrease his output as Sir Hopper increases his. :C

One series (Whisper told me about) that I have to add to this list is Red Rising by Pierce Brown. It's a futuristic sci-fi series that has a great plot. The humanity of the characters is beyond what I read in most books and sets it apart.
Large vocabulary and aimed for adults (no major inappropriate scenes though) so if you are younger apply discretion.

Interesting. I feel like I've seen it reviewed on one or two blogs, but not many. I'll add it to my TBR list, at least, since we don't have a formal list anymore.

Did we have a formal list on here? In the past year I've read about 16 books. Of those, 12 have been Brandon Sanderson. I feel like I'm obliged to find something by a different author at this point lol

On the old Underground, there was a big list on the very first post. I don't think many people used it or looked at it, though.
Also, in all fairness, it's really hard to go wrong with Sanderson. xD
