Thrasher snarled. "More like I'm attempting to salvage some semblance of productivity while listening to this all-important piece of news. Cue you, Mira."

(Oh 707 sorry I hadn't seen your edit, Sunblade)
Vane glanced down at his secure satellite pager. He gave a small frown as he read the message, then shrugged. Sometimes it just wasn't for him to know. He had learned to appreciate the sentiment...especially since his own suboordinates had since learned not to question his orders when he chose not to explain them. Starting up the black sedan that he was watching the street from, he headed off on his indirect route back to meet with the boss...keeping an eye on his rearview of course.

(( NightBlade : You're good. Deadlines for various things whacked me in the face these last two days, so I didn't have much chance to respond.)) "Right." Mira turned on the screen to show the footage she'd watched earlier, paused on a particular scene: Eon facing Master Force, a pistol in her hands. "As I said this morning, I've been going through the security feeds from Master Force's headquarters, and the long and short of what I found is this: two days ago, Eon turned against Master Force, tried to kill him, and nearly succeeded." She paused, skipped forward a few minutes in the footage, and pressed play. Onscreen, Master Force looked confused, exchanged words with Eon, and pulled out a pistol. Both shot; a bloody hole appeared in Master Force's shoulder. "Unfortunately, sheer luck and Eon's time bubble saved him- but a large number of Master Force's soldiers who'd been led by Eon rebelled with her. Equally unfortunately, she and they are all dead now, or else in Master Force's prisons." Mira skipped forward in the footage again to show- not Eon's actual death, but the minutes just after, as Master Force and his soldiers finished off the rebels. "It would've been helpful for us if she'd won, of course. Everyone knows she and Trick Shot don't- didn't, rather- get along, and even if they didn't kill each other trying to claim power, whoever was left would be in a very weakened position. But even though she didn't succeed, her rebellion still helps us." Mira paused the video again and ticked off the reasons on her fingers. "For one thing, it leaves a gap in Master Force's ranks. I think we'd know if he'd chosen someone to replace her, and until he does, there's instability among his forces. And until he appoints someone new, that instability is just going to get worse- especially if Eon's rebellion doesn't completely die with her, which I suspect it won't. Eon was daring, but she wasn't an idiot. She wouldn't have tried to take over if the only people behind her are the ones who showed up here-" Mira gestured to the screen- "and she wouldn't have left them without instructions on what to do if she died. Of course, from what I can tell, Master Force suspects that too, which I think is part of why he hasn't appointed someone new. He's still trying to figure out who's loyal and who isn't. If we can take advantage of that instability somehow, we might be able to do a lot of damage. And, most importantly- Eon knew Master Force's weakness somehow. She kept him from turning to vapor or using his gravity powers during her initial attack. And if she knew, so does someone else." ----------- The few civilians out on the streets looked away as Vane passed, as if they feared that merely glancing in his direction might be taken as a sign of rebellion. When he reached headquarters, a large complex where the city center used to be, the guards saluted and let him through, but likewise did not make eye contact. They were only human, and too low-ranking- too disposable- to want to risk annoying someone who could potentially kill you as easily as they could blink.

Vane scowled as he passed the guards and entered the headquarters compound. Everyone was paranoid...strung higher than Guy Fawkes since the disastrous rebellion attack. He parked his work vehicle in his customary spot and walked the short distance to the main building. Greeting the few other officers and rankers that he happened to pass with a curt nod, he proceeded to Master Force's office.

((Making a couple assumptions here; let me know if that's not ok.))
Master Force responded to Vane's knock with a terse, "Come in." When Vane entered, Master Force looked up, nodded slightly, and set his tablet on his desk. "Ah. Vane. Shut the door. I have a job for you."

(You're fine)
Vane shut the door behind him and stood in front of it with his arms crossed behind his back. "Yes?"

Master Force leaned forward slightly, resting his arms on the table. "Tell me, Vane- you never worked under Eon, did you? Never took orders from her? She never approached you to join her foolish campaign against me?"
((Note on power structures, partially for y'all and partially for my own reference later- you've got Master Force, then you have his lieutenants (3 until Eon's rebellion; all powered), then you'd have Vane's level of authority (a few normals but mostly powered people, less powerful than the lieutenants though) taking orders either from lieutenants or, in special cases, directly from MF.))

"So now we have to find this person. Any clue who they are?" Brett glanced up from the screen.

Vane let a tiny exhale of relief escape. He figured it would be something to this effect--and far from the many worst-case scenarios he had considered. "No, I didn't answer to that one." He replied with his slight New York clip. "I run Security and Intrigue. Autonomous." Then, with just a hint of nervousness, he added, "The rebellion was unforseen."

"Hold it right there," Thrasher said. "I don't trust security feeds. Force must want all the cells in the city to try and hit him now." He folded his arms and sat back. "I want that video. All of it. All the parts you didn't show us included."

Brett made a face at Thrasher. "Bossy much? We'd have to find out the weakness before we attack. If we don't find a weakness, no attack. No one's walking into a trap. So just breathe. If the video wasn't trust worthy I'm sure Mira wouldn't have shown us it. Right Mira?"

"Paranoid much," Thrasher snapped. "If I were Eon I'd have sent Force's weakness to every rumour mill in the state as my contingency. The way she's done it, she's just risking the secret dying with her. You understand that Force is controlling this all, don't you?"

Master Force nodded slightly, as if he'd expected that answer. "Indeed. Eon could be subtle when she wished to be. But she could not hide everything." He sat back. "I suspect that she must have been working with an outside group, or that they were working with her. She could not have done everything she did without help from someone not in my forces. Either way, Vane, I want them found. Increase your efforts; use whatever measures necessary." --------------- "I was trying to save you time and gory details by not showing the whole thing." Mira restarted the security feed just before Eon and Master Force walked on screen and let it play while she talked. "Anyway, yes, Brett is right. So far as I can tell, the tape is legitimate, and we can take more steps to confirm that it's true before we make any major actions. Maybe you're right; maybe this is a trap. But maybe it's an opportunity, and I think we should at least figure out which before we write it off." She paused, sorting through what had been said. "In answer to your question, Brett, I don't know yet who Eon would've passed that information on to. She probably gave it to several people, just in case Force found one or more of them. Probably people who were close to her, but not too close, or not obviously close."

Thrasher scowled. "Time and gory details is exactly what we want. Details keep us alive. It's not like any of us have innocent minds." He eyed Brett as if daring him to challenge the statement.
((@leilani: In your initial post, you had Master Force and Eon speaking in the italicised paragraphs. I have interpreted those paragraphs as flashbacks rather than Mira's observationsāin particular, that the security cameras recorded images but not sound. Is this correct? Also, how much of Master Force's profile (specifically powers) is common knowledge, or at least known to our rebel cell?))

"That would make sense. And anyway, if she could figure it out, I'm sure we can." Brett gave her a cocky smile before turning an offended gaze to Thrasher. "Now see here, I happen to be rather pure. Thank you very much."
A baldfaced lie. Brett had lived among a shadier circus when the supers came into power. He'd seen it all, and been elbow deep in the blood of minor villains to save his skin, but it was fun to rib the other guy.

Thrasher rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. Stay on track, you." He cracked his knuckles and pointed a thin finger at the screen just as Eon died. "For the record, I'm not against following this lead. But that's all it isāa lead. Not conclusive evidence or anything, and I'm still sure it's been edited. And probably the reason she figured it out was because she was close to him, knew him as well as anyone can know Force. Which we aren't, and we don't."

(( Dmitri Pendragon: It's sort of a mixture of both. It was meant as what she saw, but then I remembered after I posted it that, yeah, the security cameras wouldn't pick up sound. So it's what she saw, but with the dialogue added. Does that make sense? And what's in the profile is what our characters would know about him. Not all of it is common knowledge throughout the whole city, but yeah.)) You were the one complaining about how I was wasting your time. Mira kept the thought behind her lips and instead nodded. "But we don't necessarily have to figure it out from scratch, though we might be able to put something together- edited or not, the video will probably give us some kind of idea. We just have to find the person or people who Eon told and get them to tell us." Not like that wouldn't be hard enough on its own.

(( Leilani Sunblade : Thanks. That makes sense and is what I'd thought it would be.)) "Major assumption alert," Thrasher said. "If Eon believed she could kill Master Force, why would she bother telling someone? It's not as if she'd be alive to dance on his grave if someone else killed him. Me-or-no-one mentality."

(Mostly I just have nothing on them) (Dmitri I find this ironic...your character: "I don't trust video feed." *next sentence* "paranoid much?' xD) (Also just curious, you omitted your character's weakness because it isn't public knowledge, but that's not to say that any of our characters' weaknesses are?)
