They reached HQ- a nondescript, grey-black building- some fifteen minutes later. Lydia directed Jack into a parking garage and led the way into the building. Luke was already waiting for them at a pair of elevators just inside. "What took you so long?"
"What crazy route did you take to miss all the traffic?" Lydia retorted. "Anyway. Rachel, you're going to give Anna the official welcome?" Rachel nodded. "And Jack and Luke, you two can come with me and we'll see what we can find out about this strange lady." She stepped towards the elevator on the right and pushed the up button.
Rachel pushed the down button on the other elevator, which chimed and slid its doors open almost immediately. "Ready, Anna?"

Anna bit her lip and nodded. "Yeah...as I'll ever be."

"Great." Rachel stepped into the elevator, waited for Anna to step in after before pressing the button to shut the doors. "So, we're going to see one of the more official people in the organization- it's the New Generation, I'm pretty sure I can tell you that. We're pretty much what the name implies, a new generation of people with superpowers. Most of the members were either brought up in it or founders of it. The person we're going to see . . . he, or she, will ask you some questions- pretty basic, most of them. You don't exactly have to answer, but it would be helpful if you did. They're mostly just to figure out who you are and make sure you haven't, you know, murdered anyone- or that, if you have, you've turned around now."

Steve was just finishing his meal when his phone vibrated in his pocket. Putting down his drink, he pulled out his phone and checked the messages.
We've got a difficult target for you this time. He's the leader of a large business that rivals the business of our client. What our client wants you to do, is kill the owner of the rival business and destroy their business place. Think you're up to it?
Steve smiled as he typed in the reply. I've been waiting for a challenge. Consider that business as good as gone.

Anna nodded again, fiddling with the sleeves of her jacket. "Right, yeah. Okay..." She sighed. Was she ready for this?

The elevator stopped, but Rachel pressed the button to hold the doors closed, looking concernedly at Anna. "Are you sure you're ok? We don't have to rush."

Anna closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. "Yes..." Her eyes opened and she looked at Rachel, giving her a tiny smile. "I'm ready."

"Ok." Rachel returned the smile with a wide, encouraging one. She led the way out of the elevator and down a hallway. Hidden from view, cameras and sensors of all sorts watched their progress and checked for unauthorized weapons. At a black-painted door, Rachel stopped, knocked, and pushed it open without waiting for an answer.
A middle-aged woman- serious, but not exactly severe- stood. "Rachel. And this is Anna? Sit, both of you."

Anna nearly turned back and ran for the elevator when the door opened, but held her ground. Taking a steadying breath, she took her seat, folding her hands in her lap. She wasn't sure if she should speak yet, so she remained silent.

The woman resumed her seat behind the desk and turned so she mostly faced a slim computer. "I will assume, Anna, that Rachel has already told you something of what to expect. Whether or not she has, I will tell you this: we are not your enemy. I'm going to ask you some questions, which I hope you'll answer honestly. We're not going to share the information with anyone else; we're simply trying to make sure of who you are. Now, we'll start with something simple: what's your full name?"

Anna nodded slightly to show the woman she was listening, then cleared her throat. "My name is Anna Evelyn Tyler."

Good. There'll be large slice of the profit for you if you can make it look like an accident, read the bright screen in Steve's hands. I'll try, he replied.
Steve got ready to leave and find the location of the targeted business. Steve smirked. It had been a while since he's been able to have fun.
((I have an idea: your organization could hear about the destruction, search for Steve, apprehend him, and ultimately capture him. Sound good?))

Anna twisted a ring on her finger. "I, uh..." Frowning, she recalled an old conversation she wasn't supposed to hear. "Telekinetic and healing abilities."

Rachel grinned. "Oh, you're a healer? Me too?"
"And thank the heavens for it," the woman murmured. Louder, she said, "Good, solid powers. Healing especially. The world will always need another healer." Several more taps of the keys. "How long have you been in New York?"

"Thank you." The woman didn't ask another question for a few minutes, just typed and scrolled and made "hmm"-ing noises.
((So, would she find any records suggesting that Anna's the criminal type? The organization has pretty comprehensive information- think Shield or FBI or anything like that.)) ((Also, I g2G for a while, see you later!))

Steve was glad that it was a large business, because it would be much easier to locate it. Unfortunately, that may be the only easy part of this job. Typing the name of the business into the GPS app of his phone, Steve started finishing his preparations. He had a nagging feeling in his mind that something's going to go wrong on this mission, but he pushed it away. No time for thoughts like those now. Psyching himself up, he walked to his car and set off for the target.

Detective Johnson sighed, leaning back in the cold, metal chair, "do we need to call the Enforcers back in, Mr. Frost?" "No." The man at the other side of the table hissed, shrinking back in his chair, "no, don't do that." Johnson nodded slowly, setting a pile of paper onto the table, "let me ask you again, do you confess to killing Lauren Hart on the night of-" "I didn't kill her." The frail man whispered, "I--I didn't." "But you acquired her name and exploited it." The man, Silas, gave a shaky, grin, "I'll tell you, if you tell me something…" "Your not getting my name," Johson blurted out, fear flashing into his eyes at the thought. Do it, Detective, a voice spoke into his com. Silas shrugged, "then, your not getting my confession." "I…" "Is Daddy scared of the bad man?" Silas pouted. Detective Johnson, give the subject your name, or you and any known affiliates will be terminated, the voice spoke into Johnson's com once again. The Detective was silent for a long while, a bead of sweat dripping down his face, "Johnson. Marcus Johnson." He finally whispered, in defeat. Silas furrowed his brow, nodding slowly, "I'm so sorry for your loss." Marcus looked up with a slight frown, "what?" "Your daughter drowned in a swimming pool when she was three." "H-how did you…" "I'm very very sorry, that must have been so terrible." Silas said, tears welling up in his eyes. And then, a thousand memories were crammed into Marcus Johnson's head at once. He relived the day Emma had drowned over and over again, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. He held out his hand, gasping for breath, "s-stop." Silas shook his head, "no." (( Bit over the top, I know. ))

(( Alvar: So I'm assuming that our charries go after Steve after his next hit.)) ((@gamemaster: Cool character.)) The woman nodded at the screen, apparently satisfied, and swiveled her chair to fully face Anna and Rachel. "Miss Smith, what has Rachel told you about the purpose of the New Generation?"

((Darnit, could've sworn you said Smith earlier. *facepalm*))
"Of course. I'm sorry, Miss Tyler." The woman nodded. "We are. And as the next generation, we see it as our duty to use those gifts to serve the rest of mankind- to protect, primarily, but also in other ways. I cannot guarantee you a spot in our ranks, but I will be glad to tell my superiors about you- if, that is, you would be interested in joining us?"

"J-joining you?" Anna swallowed. "I, uh..." She closed her eyes, thinking hard. Did she want to join them? Was it the right thing to do? What if they ended up like— Anna, snap out of it. This could be it. Safety. She opened her eyes, looking at the woman. "Yes, I would like to join the New Generation."

"Excellent." The woman glanced at the computer long enough to click a few things. "I should have a decision for you by tomorrow- the next day, at the latest. In the meantime, we'll make sure your needs are taken care of and that you don't get any unwanted attention." She offered a smile that just managed to be sympathetic. "We are well aware that most gifted young people outside our organization, as well as many of those within it, are escaping some sort of trouble simply because people, as a rule, are suspicious of anyone different from the norm. On that subject, is there anything in particular we should know?"

Anna bit the inside of her lip. Should I?—No, it might change their minds. But you can't lie—you should tell her... "N-nothing I can think of at the moment, ma'am," she finally answered.
