Patience nodded, stepping outside. She took a shawl from her basket and draped it across her shoulders. "Just this way," she said quietly, glancing over at where her father was mounting his horse. Then she turned in the opposite direction and started to walk, hesitating so Addison could catch up.

Addison's strident pace kept up with no delay...or need of much...patience. xDxD sorry I had to. But seriously, he kept up easily and also kept his eyes peeed and shooting hand ready. Apparently this town wasn't as quiet as it had first looked.

((Bahahaha I knew some puns were gonna crop up with her name))
Patience, for the most part, looked quite calm for someone who had a gun aimed at their heart just minutes ago. Still, her hands clutched her basket tightly, making her knuckles white. "When did you come into town?" She asked Addison, trying to break the somewhat uncomfortable silence. "I haven't seen you around here before."

Jeremiah nodded, mounting his horse. "They'll serve a nice long stint in jail for what they've done." Jail seemed like a soft option, but Enapay didn't comment. The sheriff came from another world entirely. And that's just fine. I'll respect that--as long as Jeremiah returned the courtesy, and Chankoowashtay came home safely. Enapay pushed his mare into a canter. He longed to gallop full-speed across the wilderness, but that would waste the horses. Better to conserve their strength. After all, they had a difficult road ahead. Prairie grass would eventually give way to woodlands and rocky outcroppings, the beginning of the Black Hills. And the end of Lakota territory. He shivered, glancing back at Jeremiah. "Have you been this way before?" ((I've been researching the road to Sacramento. Lol. So much fun. Here's a glimpse of the Black Hills, which is where our guys are headed:

((Ooooooh, purty))
Jeremiah nudged his horse after Enapay's, keeping alongside him. As the scenery changed, he kept a steady watch on the horizon, looking for any clues as to where the wanted traders were. "Last time I went to Sacramento, I was five years old," he replied quietly. "It's been a while."

"The smoother path is this way. They're most likely hungover, so they'll want an easier ride."

"Tomahawk in a... what is that supposed to mean?" Sounded like a threat. Enapay gave the sheriff a wary glance, but followed him to the left.

Jeremiah held back a chuckle, leaning to the side to check the path. "I don't see any hoofprints, but they'd come this way. I know it." He glanced over at Enapay. "Do you have any clue as to who they'd give your brother to for the cash? Any enemies? Rival?"

"I came along on Saturday, lookin' for a job." Addison replied as he ambled along. "Looks like your pa the Sheriff has something for me to do."

Patience nodded. "Ah, I see. Pa wants your help with the barn, correct? He kept talking about how he was going to ask around about it."

"Do you have any clue as to who they'd give your brother to for the cash? Any enemies? Rival?" English was such an evasive language--the local dialects were especially difficult. Honestly, Enapay understood Shakespearean poetry better than Western slang. But no matter. Jeremiah didn't seem to mean any harm. "Well... our traditional rivals are the Crow and Pawnee. But this doesn't feel like tribal warfare. It just feels random. Like the Earth split open and swallowed my brother. If there was no bounty, or the kidnapping wasn't so organized, I would blame it on the meanness of the traders' hearts." Enapay sighed helplessly. "So, no. I haven't a clue who would want my brother."

"Well, so far, you seem to have excellent aim, so I'd say this will be easy for you," Patience replied, smiling faintly.

Jeremiah nodded. Could've been just some racist idiots. Or this 'George' knows someone...a slave trader? Hope not. He urged his horse to move a little faster. Injun or not, there was a kid in danger. He wasn't going to let the two criminals escape.

He wasn't going to let the two criminals escape. Enapay yelped suddenly. "Wait." He pulled his mare to a halt, dismounted, and approached a thicket of trees by the edge of the road. "Broken spiderwebs." The air smelled strange as well. Like horse manure. "They may have gone off-road." EDIT ((Hey guys! I may have convinced Gamey to come back onto the thread and play the kidnappers. :) ))

Jeremiah reined in his horse, looking over. "Good work," he said, trying to get a good look into the thicket. "On foot or still on their horses? Looks pretty dense..."
((Yaaaaaaay Gamey!!!))

"They probably dismounted." Which meant... yes. A footprint. Half a footprint, anyway, leading into the woods. "They probably hope to lose us in there, but the undergrowth will slow them down." ((Gonna disappear for awhile. My family's going to see the Jungle Book. :P))

"Water seems to be a favorite choice for most people," Patience said with a slight tone that couldn't quite be identified as teasing or not. "Anyway, what is it like, on the range? Is it as boring as some say it is?"
