Amelia tilted her head. "Son, I'm not the Sheriff's wife for nothing, I know there's more to it. Tell me what happened. I don't want to hear about it from one of the local gossips later."

"Ma'am, a ruffian pulled a gun on some innocent people. But the Sheriff and I subdued him and he didn't hurt anybody." Addison replied, his voice a bit more firm, and emphasized the last phrase especially.

Patience gave him a tiny smile when he didn't mention her, and Amelia sighed. "Hooligans...I'm glad he's locked up now. And where is Jeremiah now?" "Working, Ma."

Jeremiah stared into the distance. "Saruman..." ( :P ) Jeremiah crouched behind a bush, letting out a faint growl at the sight before them. Against two men, they had a chance. Against a whole caravan...not so much. "We need to get your brother out before they join the caravan," he whispered. "Can you make some sort of call or noise to let him know you're here? The last thing we need is him bolting in the wrong direction." ((Lol. xD)) "At this distance... Probably not. But if we could sneak closer, I might be able to get his attention." And then what? Start shooting? Enapay shook his head, wishing that he had Mankato or Lootah by his side. "Perhaps we should take out their horses first."

"Dead horses'll only give 'em cover," Jeremiah replied. "Live horses are just one big pile of panic when spooked. We'll get closer, you'll signal your brother, then I'll distract them so he can get to us."

Enapay nodded to Jeremiah, then drew his gun and began to stalk closer to the traders.

"Good luck," Jeremiah muttered, pulling out his gun and moving the other way. As he crouched behind a tree, he heard a hiss, and found himself looking down at an angry raccoon. "Hm...you'll do."

Sawyer gripped Chankoowashtay by the hair, dragging him towards one of the horses. He tossed him up over the side of it and climbed on, galloping towards the caravan. Two men broke from Ciqala's group as they followed in Sawyer's wake, turning and heading back over the hill.

He ran at a crouch, darting from the cover of a shrub to the cover of a boulder. How could he get Chankoowashtay's attention? Look over here. Over here. Over here! Enapay whistled sharply through his teeth, imitating the cry of a Whitebob. There was no such bird, of course--it was an inside joke. The reverse of a Bobwhite. Chankoowashtay raised his head. Their eyes met for a fraction of a second, but something passed between them, their minds melding in that spooky sibling way. He's going to jump.Sure enough, Chankoowashtay threw himself off the trader's horse. Thump! He rolled into the grass, barely avoiding the galloping hooves.

When he was close enough, he threw the struggling raccoon with all his strength at the closest horse and its rider.

Sawyer shouted a curse, yanking his horse around to face Chankoowashtay. He flipped a revolver into his hand, pulled back the hammer and-- hIs horse gave a terrified cry as the raccoon hit the ground in front of it, rearing back and hurling Sawyer to the ground. He rose, spitting grass and dirt from his mouth. Ciqala leapt from his horse, rolling nimbly past Sawyer and charging towards Chankoowashtay.

Sawyer frantically grabbed his revolver off the ground and sent a bullet into the furious raccoon, efficiently snuffing out it's long time dream to visit Rome and become an architect. (( Jk jk )) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Sawyer let out a shout, punting the animal away from him. He scrambled to his feet, face ruddy and snarling as he unslung his rifle from his back, looking about for the culprits.

Amelia frowned. "That crazy man who pulled a gun earlier, right?"

Addison nodded. "He...got a bit banged up in the scuffle. The ruffian I mean, not the Sheriff."

(Ah right. NO TEMPTATIONS)
Addison looked back up again to meet Amelia's gaze firmly, and evenly replied. "Ma'am, I don't think it's right to speak all about fights and nasty such to a lady. Your Sheriff and your daughter here didn't get narry a scratch, and that's the truth see."

Amelia sighed and nodded—but Jeremiah was in for an interrogation later. "Well, I guess you have time to yourself before my husband gets back to show you the barn. I would, but that door is a pesky one."

((Oops! Sorry, WookieeElf and gamemastergrimwarden . :P)) Was that... Ciqala? The traitor. Enapay hissed in anxiety, willing his brother to run faster, but the enemy was almost upon him. There was not telling what would happen if Chankoowashtay was recaptured. After all, Sawyer had nearly shot the boy a second ago. So, left with no other option, Enapay drew his revolver and fired at Ciqala's back. The revolver kicked pleasantly in his grip. And now I had better run--that shot would give away his position to the other traders. While the gunshot still hung in the air, Enapay crouched low and darted through the underbrush, heading to the aid of his brother. ((On the subject of making trouble at the farm, lemme talk it over with Gamey. :P We might be able to come up with something.))

((It's okay, Ly. )) Jeremiah's frown deepened at the gunshot. Enapay, what the *beep* are you doing? Scrambling through the bush, and trying to make as much noise as possible, he drew his gun and shot at Ciqala's horse, then at Sawyer. If he got their attention away from the other two, they could escape.

Ciqala leapt down as soon as he heard gunfire, a chunk of earth where he had been moments before exploded. He rolled behind a fallen tree at the edge of the field.
Sawyer didn't miss a beat, sending three bullets in the direction of the gunfire as he rolled out of the way and into cover. He slowly edged back towards Chankoowashtay, scanning the brush with a keen eye.

The bullet took Sawyer's hat off the top of his head, and he exclaimed a curse. He leapt behind the tree next to Ciqala, and turned his gun to Chankoowashtay, sending a bullet at the back of his leg. Ciqala peaked his rifle over the top of the fallen tree, firing a shot at Jeremiah.

A shout pierced the air--Chankoowashtay. He collapsed to the ground, clasping his leg and moaning in Lakota. Enapay, Enapay, Enapay... Enapay raced to his brother's side. "What's wrong? Are you hurt?" Obviously. Blood flowed from a puncture in Chankoowashtay's calf, dribbling through his clutching fingers. "Please. Try to be quiet. I know it hurts, but the traders will hear." Enapay ripped off his shirt and hastily bound the wound. "Now then, can you climb on my back? We left the horses by the edge of the field." ______________
Halliday Mulligan stood on the front step, peering into the window of Amelia's house.
