One of the horsemen jerked back in the saddle, giving a grunt of pain as he raised a hand to his shoulder, quickly returning fire. Sawyer went low on his horse to avoid the bullets that tore through the air, he unloaded his last few shots at Jeremiah as the two of them raced for Enapay. Jeremiah yanked his horse to the side and to a halt, putting himself before Enapay and his pursuers. "Run!" He shouted, trying to reload his gun. Enapay ran. His vision jerked with each step over the rough terrain, and Chankoowashtay clung to him like a rucksack, screaming, "They're coming! They're coming!" Jeremiah managed to get a few bullets into his gun, firing at Sawyer before kicking his horse, riding towards Enapay. "Toss 'im up!"

"Hold on!" Jeremiah kicked the horse again, and it galloped as fast as it could with three passengers.

Addison shrugged as he went to the window and watched the man depart . "Dunno." He replied."But we sure ain't going to find out."

Patience moved alongside Addison, lowering her voice to a whisper so her mother wouldn't here. "The Indian at the saloon..." She looked up at him, biting her lip. "Do you think..."

Sawyer bolted up beside his two horsemen, "get back to the caravan, tell the others to saddle up!" The two men gave nods, one tossing a rifle to his leader as they quickly turned and galloped back towards the small army of covered wagons. The bounty hunter dug spurs into his horse's side, firing like a madman at Jeremiah and Enapay as they fled.

Jeremiah urged his horse to go faster, weaving through the brush so their pursuers wouldn't have a clear target.

It was impossible to get a good shot while the horse was weaving through the underbrush. Nevertheless, when an opportunity presented itself, he would be ready.

Sawyer stabbed spurs into his horse's side once more, giving a shout as Jeremiah sped off. He raised his rifle, wasting his last two shots as he fired in desperation at Enapay. With a curse, the man brutally spurred his horse once again, trying to speed it onward. The animal just gave a pitiful whinny and lurched forward, throwing Sawyer and itself to the ground in a cloud of dust... (#HorseyFaceplant )

Sawyer was down, and their path to safety was clear. Now all they had to do was keep riding and return to town.

Enapay dashed to the jailhouse and knocked urgently on the door. "Coming, coming..." A tall, well-built man answered the door, cleaning his hands with a rag that was tinted a suspicious shade of red. He frowned slightly at Enapay. "Can I help you?"

I want you to tell me about your home. Focus on the details." Gently, Adams started to clean the boy's wound.

Chankoowashtay whispered in Lakota. "Dr. Adams wants to know about home." Enapay was quick to translate. "Lots of details. If you're a good patient, he'll give you some candy." "Chocolate?" Enapay smirked. Then, switching to English: "My brother wants to know what sort of candy you have in your bag." As the doctor began to clean the wound, Chankoowashtay blanched and growled something through his teeth. "Because--because it's hard work to describe something in detail. Especially under these difficult circumstances." Wince. "So if I give the doctor a panoramic description of domestic bliss on the Great Plains, then he'd better not pay me in licorice. I want chocolate. Dark chocolate. With little bits of almond and peppermint." Always negotiating. Well, at least he kept his sense of humor. Enapay relayed these demands to the doctor, emphasizing his brother's sarcasm, just in case there was any confusion.

"Tell him I do have dark chocolate, but the peppermint is separate. If he does really well, I'll give him both." The doctor worker a little bit, then sighed in relief. "No bullet. It must've fallen out. No major arteries hit, he's gonna make it." Jeremiah nodded, looking tired and relieved. "Thank you, Adams." The doctor nodded, then started to bandage Chankoowashtay's leg. "I can't tell if I need to stitch it, but this should hold."

"You should probably sit down."

Finished with the bandage, Adams searched his bag, then pressed a little bar of chocolate and a stick of peppermint in Chankoowashtay's hand. "That's for being a good patient," he said with a smile, then turned him medial attention to Jeremiah.

(Weeell. Kinda dropped the ball on this one I suppose. Though this thread did start in the waning days). (I've been researching the history of cavalry. The transfer of heavy cavalry like the Cataphracts to the West by the Roman Emperor Gallienus. Neat stuff.)

(I can't find an actual History themed thread. I don't know where to go to talk about my newfound interest in the Gaelic chieftan Vercingetorix and his war with Julius Caesar.) (Also, I miss historical fiction battles. If the Undergrounders ever find it in them to roleplay again I would like to revive this thread.)
