Soooo I just joined this place a few days ago when I discovered I was an elf and my new friend Eruanna told me to make a writing thread. So here I go!
Disclaimer: this is a new Idea I had. I literally just got this idea like two seconds ago. It has not been thought through at all, and I've had writer's block really bad for monthes now. So obviously, I have to write it right now, or the ideas might go away again. Ok, here it goes...
"Stupid mountains!" I sighed angrily as I unlaced my high, leather boots to soak my miserably sore feet. Finding streams among the rocky terrain had become one of my top priorities over the last week and a half. We had been equipped with the best gear in the kingdom, and we all still had sore feet. I wondered silently how the mountain Rangers survived this everyday. I finally got my boots and stockings off and slipped my feet into the cool water. I thought about laying on the ground but a backwards glance showed me that it probably wouldn't be very relaxing. "Stupid rocks!" I mumbled in frustration. I looked around at my squad. There were eight of them and I had no idea why these random individuals had been chosen for this task. Actually, I had no real idea what our task was at all. I thought back to when the assignment was given in the court of the King.
"Abigail Spirit?"
My heart jumped into my throat. "Did the King just say my name?" I thought in panic. "No, he was calling a leader for a special mission! That's not me!" I looked around me to find all my fellow soldiers staring at me. My younger sister who sat beside me nudged me with her elbow. I looked back to the King with wide eyes. He returned my gaze with a caring one and the corners of his mouth lifted in an almost amused smile. I gulped and stiffly rose from my chair. "Sir!" I said with less gusto than usual.
"I have noticed your wounds from your last battle have nearly healed completely," he said kindly.
"Yes, sir. only scars remain," I replied.
He continued in a stronger voice, "it's time for you to return to active duty. I want to give you more responsibilities and this will be a good start and a good learning experience."
My shock and fear began to melt. His eyes were so full of faith in me. If he believed in me, I could do anything.
"You are well aware of our enemy, so I need not brief you on that." he continued. I saw the hurts I felt in my heart shining out of his eyes. Oh, I was well aware of our enemy, alright. "I will assign you a small squad. I want you to lead them through the mountain trails until you reach the Dragon Pass. Take the pass into the Briar Wood and circle back to our kingdom. Your tasks will be made known to you when you reach them," he finished in satisfaction, his words echoing through the large hall. My heart swelled with excitement and confidence.
The King stood up from his throne and walked toward me. He offered me his arm and I took it as I had done before so many times. He led me away from the rows of soldiers, past the rows of captains and generals, and to the front of the room. He faced me and softly asked, "will you take this task upon yourself?" It was a real question. It wasn't a command.
I gave a crooked smile. "You know I'll say yes."
"That's my girl," he replied w/ a smile like a proud father's. He turned back to the rest of the room. "I will now call the names of the soldiers in this company," he announced. I attempted to contain my expectant grin as I waited to see who I would be commanding.
I rolled my eyes at the memory as I looked around at those soldiers. They all looked at little less grumpy at the moment as the stream cooled their feet. Except for Daltin, of course. He still looked as expressionless as ever. I felt a pang of sadness for him. My sister and I had known him for many years and I knew the reasons he didn't feel anything. I was glad he had been assigned to this mission, because that meant I could keep him close by and keep an eye on him.
"Hey, Abigail," I heard Karina's soft voice in my ear as she sat down next to me.
"Wait for it..." I thought irritably. "Aaand, there she is," I rolled my eyes as my sister, Emilia sat down next to Karina. "They are too much alike! One Emilia is about all I can handle!" I thought. But I didn't say that. Instead, I said, "what's up, ladies?" and smiled my typical cocky half smile.
"Well! We were wondering if we might make the Kings Markers more often!" Karina said enthusiastically. "After all, the king never specifies how often, but it only makes more sense to do it as often as possible. That's sure to make him more pleased!" I attempted to hide my slight disgust at her lack of understanding and looked to Emilia. She smiled broadly and nodded her head, her burgundy bangs falling from behind her ear.
"Of course! Emilia doesn't care! She's just going along with Karina, as always!" I thought angrily. My brows narrowed and I watched the water running over my feet intently.
"What do you guys think?" Karina asked, turning to the rest of the group with a friendly smile.
Corbin immediately agreed. The young, athletic soldier would agree to anything Emilia agreed with.
"I don't think it could hurt," Codemir spoke up, also eager to agree with Emilia. He was a few years older than the rest of us and had proven a good soldier in times past. I hadn't really known him before this mission, but he found my sister to be ravishing, and I found that I got along with him well enough. Apparently, we disagreed on this, though. I glared at him sternly. His eyes widened slightly when he noticed the look on my face. "But, I guess it's kind of unnecessary," he said slowly, attempting to recover. Obviously his feelings weren't strong on the issue.
"I say it's a great idea!" Corbin restated his opinion. "I say we vote on it! That's the only fair way."
Yup, that was all I could handle at the moment. I shook my head in frustration and spoke up. "The King's markers are for remembering what he has done for each of us. It is not to please him and it is not a race to see who can do it the most often. It is a time to remember. If we turn it into a ritual that is just another part of our day, how special will that moment be? How much will we actually remember?" I looked around at each of them, to see if anyone would argue. When I was met with silence, I concluded my decision. "We will continue to do it when our hearts are moved to do so."
"Why do you just get to decide like that?" Chandler spoke up. I cringed. He was a very young soldier and had a lot of potential. Initially, I was happy to see him placed in my squad. He had bright eyes and a bold heart, but being placed in a special team filled his inexperienced heart with pride. He didn't see me as a leader because he thought someone higher ranking should have been placed as head.
"Chandler," I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "In case you were absent from the King's meeting, I will fill you in on his orders. He appointed me to LEAD you guys over the mountain trails, through the Dragon Pass, and into th-"
"I know! You made us go over it one hundred times!" Chandler interrupted. "I don't think the King intended for your opinion to be law, though!"
Arissa looked up for the first time in the conversation and met Chandler's eyes. "I think she's right, guys. Building the King's Markers should be a special time." Arissa was a warrior. her body was somewhat frail, but her heart and mind had been the driving force behind many victories. I was glad she agreed with me, though Corbin and Chandler probably paid no heed to her opinion. She was not strong or athletic, so she often received less respect than she deserved.
"Listen, guys," Codemir spoke up in his I'm-the-adult-here voice. "We all know that when to build the King's Markers is the decision of a squad leader. Abigail is not forcing her opinion on us. She's just making decisions that leaders have to make, and that's the end of it." Codemir had been a sort of big brother to Corbin and Chandler for many years and had their respect. They lowered their heads submissively.
"I turned to Karina and my sister. Emilia looked a little mad, but didn't say anything. "I'm sorry, karina, but this is the way it's going to be," I stated gently.
"Oh, it's not a big deal," she said politely, keeping a cheery smile. I could see the disappointment in her blue eyes though. I looked at the last member of our company and smiled. Lynn was intently massaging her feet and looked as if she had no idea anyone else had even spoken.
"What do you think, Lynn?" I asked. She looked up suddenly, brown eyes wide. My smile widened at her surprised response.
"Oh, I don't know! I wasn't listening!" She laughed. Lynn and I got along beautifully. Though I kind of wished she had stayed home. She was still pretty banged up from previous battles.
I sighed and pulled my feet out of the water. "Well, that was a lovely chat, but we need to hit the trail."
"Is that another exclusive squad leader decision?" Chandler asked.
I dropped my shoulders and looked up at the sky. "This seemed like it would be a lot easier a week and a half ago."
Sooo... This isn't showing that I indented paragraphs... I promise I did... But, I don't feel like fixing that right now. Maybe later!
