Welcome to the board game thread! The best place in the whole wide forum to talk board games and discuss strategy. So! Here's a couple board games that I like and maybe you play too - feel free to add to the list and talk about them! Monetary based games: Monopoly, Cashflow, and Settlers of Catan. War based games: Risk (fun), Castle Risk (very fun), Lord of the Rings Risk (very very fun). Axis & Allies, Uno, Life, Scrabble, and I would be remorse to forget Twister! Of late I've been getting into Catan. Has anyone expanded their map with additional resource hexes? Looks like a fun way to lengthen the game.

Lord of the Rings Risk is AWESOME. ALso, Dominion and Axis and Allies are two favorites as well
I have! I love the game extension

I've only played one game of Axis & Allies, but it was quite fun. You have any strategies you like in that game?
Catan seems to be really popular on college campuses right now.

Heh I haven't played it much either. I am usually a defensive player in most strategy games though
Hmm how bout that

Settlers of Catan always ends far too quickly for me. I have my eye on the expansion packs for Christmas.
I've played a few of the other games you've mentioned—Risk, Dominion, Monopoly. Some of them I haven't heard of. Does anyone here play Robber Knights or Saga? They're probably much less well-known than most of the games here.

Has anyone here played Pandemic? It's super fun. (Well, unless you're the type of person who's really competitive, since it's a cooperative game.) Basically you're trying to save the world from disease. As for games already mentioned- Risk is awesome. So's Catan; I haven't played it in ages, though. And I also love Ticket to Ride, which is somewhat similar, but not completely. Dmitri Pendragon: I haven't played either of those games, but they sound rather cool.

I've never played risk, but I've always meant to. Settlers of Catan sounds interesting, but I know next to nothing about it.
Anyone here play Stratego?

Elethia Arvell: Catan is the best board game I've ever played. Go for it, if you can get your hands on one.

Elethia Arvell I've heard of Stratego several times, but I've never played it. It looks fun! Oh, and I forgot about LotR Monopoly. I always wanted to be a real estate mogul in Middle-Earth. >: D I never heard of Pandemic before - looks really cool. I'm confused at how it works, though.

Stratego is a very fun game, and is has a relatively short playing time, so you can get plenty of games in. Long games always drag a little bit to me, but that's just my personal preference.
Yes, how exactly does Pandemic work? It looks really cool.

I know what you mean about short games. Sometimes it's really nice just to do a short game. (Though sometimes I get really involved and competitive and I hardly care how long a game it becomes, ha.)

Stratego is a pretty amazingly simple yet complex game. Easy to learn like chess but even more strategy options
Pandemic...Hmm I've played it once but can't remember a thing about it.
Other cool games: Ticket to Ride Dominion Seven Wonders And a game I'm extremely excited to obtain and play; "Scythe". It's based off one of my favorite artists.
Is Dungeons and Dragons technically a board game to you? I think it is.
Also: I think there should be a popular vote to see which games get representation in the thread title. I say that Risk deserves a spot x)

I haven't played any of those games you mentioned, NightBlade, but I've heard of several. But looking up Scythe concept art ... woah. That looks like it could be an absolutely incredible game. What are the game mechanics like, do you know?
EDIT: Oh, and I'm not sure how to edit the title to add Risk.

Edit your first post. @warrior.
Is there somehow we can play a board game together online?

Done. Thanks, Raptor!
I was thinking the same. I'm sure there are some games. I think you might be able to do that on the Catan website.

I've played Risk via Google Hangout on multiple occasions- basically, you have one person who runs the board and sets out pieces, everyone rolls their dice and reports their rolls, and the game proceeds in that way. I don't have a Risk board or a detachable webcam to actually moderate the game (though I might be able to borrow Risk from the library; not sure), but if someone wanted to set that up, I'd be happy to join in. Catan you could play the same way, I think. That one I actually could moderate, if I bring my Catan board back from Thanksgiving break, except for the whole webcam thing.
Regarding Pandemic: it's kind of hard to explain without the board in front of you, but I'll give it a shot: -The board is similar to a Risk board, in that it's a map of the world. It doesn't have countries marked out, but it does have major cities. It also has lines indicating which cities are connected for travel and disease spread. -In addition, you have two decks of cards. One is the player deck; we'll talk about that later. The other is the disease deck, and it controls the spread of the disease. Each card in the disease deck specifies a city and a disease. Starting out, you draw a certain number of cards and put disease cubes on the indicated cities, which are now infected. As the game goes on, you draw two, three, or four cards each turn and place more disease cubes on those cities to simulate the spread of the disease. -Back to the players. Each player has a different role- Research Specialist, Military Doctor, Quarantine Specialist, so on. Each role has special abilities; for example, diseases cannot affect the city in which the quarantine specialist is in. The players all start out wherever CDC headquarters are (don't remember the city) and move around the boards. In each turn, they can take either three or four actions, which include moving from one city to another, removing disease cubes, building research stations, and sharing information. -The player cards, which I mentioned earlier, are drawn each turn as well. Like the disease cards, each player card contains a city and a type of disease. However, instead of spreading the disease, these allow you to travel more quickly (by discarding the card for the city you wish to go to) or cure the diseases (by collecting five cards with the same disease). Once you find a cure for the disease, you can remove all of that disease from one city in one action; if you remove all of that disease from the board, it's eradicated and it won't come back for the rest of the game. -There's a lot of other smaller details I could mention, but it's probably confusing enough as it is, and I think this gives you the general gist of the game. It really is super fun, IMO. If I had the game with me, and I didn't lack an external webcam, I would totally be down for running a game via Hangouts. Maybe if I can find a way to simulate the board . . .

That does sound cool. Reminds me of a reversal of a computer game where you are the disease. D:

Man, we should play Catan or something online. I think it's free to get an account for Settlers of Catan and play.

Warrior of Aror: That's an interesting computer game . . . I feel like I've heard of it . . . Dmitri Pendragon: Definitely do. It's super fun. Aviar Goldeneagle: We should. I'd be up for a game sometime, if we did it on a Friday evening or sometime on a Saturday.

So I just looked into playing online. You can download the game from catanuniverse.com/ (playing in browser didn't work for me, I had to download). The game is still in beta but seems to work mostly fine. After you've downloaded, install. The installation process is in German but it's pretty easy to follow. After that you can load the game, register, login, customise your character and play. It's easy enough to add only friends to a game, so if we got enough players on at the same time we could play.

Do you have to download the game in order to connect to others who've downloaded the game? Or can those who just play via the internet connect with those who've downloaded it?

Pretty sure you can play with everyone no matter how you play. But I couldn't get it to work through the browser for me. EDIT: Trying to get it working through the browser on a different computer now. Seems to be working. Elytra : Have you tried to play through the browser? Double EDIT: Leilani Sunblade : I got it working on a different computer through the browser, and yes you can connect with those who download. It's probably easier overall to just go through the browser, although it takes a little longer to start up each time. Warrior of Aror : Yes, it's legal. @all: I tested inviting friends and starting games and it's pretty easy to do. So if anyone else wants to register we could get together sometime and play.
