Heh. Thanks. And thanks for doing a word war with me too. I really needed it!

Sure thing. So did I. I'm a bit behind my daily word count goal, but it's almost midnight so I'm just going to bed now.

I am too, but I still have a couple hours left before midnight. Good luck catching up, though!

I'm going to be gone for a week and a half or so to a place where I will have very little time for writing. So I'm planning to do a ton of writing on Tuesday (the 12th) to make sure I don't fall behind on my writing schedule.
I was thinking of having a day-long word war (relaxed, nothing super-competitive) like we used to do once in a while a few years ago. Any of you interested?

Would anyone like to do a writing prompt challenge with me? Short, long, medium, whatever. Just to get some excercise in

NightBlade: It depends a little on the prompt and the challenge, but probably not- work, Camp NaNo, and blogging are keeping me busy as it is.

Write a scene where three MCs from different projects of yours collide—figuratively or literally.

Would you like a Truth or Dare?

Which of your protagonists resembles you the most?

Physically or personally? Physically, I really don't know…probably either Caspian or Nathaniel Sparks from my Space Explorers series (which was the first series I wrote; I sent you "Rock Planet" last writing group). As a person, Liel. At least Liel from the first draft of The Teller's Apprentice. He's undergone a few revisions since then.
I say that Liel resembles me most, but really every character of mine is based off a trait I've seen in myself, taken to an extreme. Berland is my introverted shyness, Jaraal my ruthless practicality, Jorus my merciless justice. Jarayim is my stutter. Deselle is my internal conflict. Liel would probably be my dogged wilfulness and pessimism about the world.

Yes, I definitely see some of your personality in Jorus and Liel, but the others I'm not as familiar with. :) Are the similarities intentional? Or does it happen naturally? And would you like another Truth or Dare? ;) Raptor: Not anymore. >:D

It happens naturally. I need to understand my characters on an emotional level in order to write them, and the only emotions I've ever felt are my own. Ergo, I base each of my characters off myself.
I'll have a Dare this time.

I'll have a Dare this time. Heheh, that's usually what happens to me as well. But sometimes I do it intentionally. ;) Write a scene where Liel meets the characters from Rock Planet. :P

Apparently I don't have three main characters, so I'll make do with Katie and Kleio. ;) ________________________
((EDIT: On second thought, I've removed this Dare, since it reveals something about one of my stories that is better kept confidential. ;) I would write a real replacement, but unfortunately my creative powers run dry at ten o'clock PM. :P So just pretend that I've written something amusing.))

Reality melted before my eyes, peeling into strips and dissolving to mist. I froze, all senses on high alert. Gripped the stone in my hand and wished for a target to throw it at. Anything. A cliff, a beast, a man. Anything to show that I still existed.
The stone's sharp contours pressed into my skin. I existed all right.
Finally the mist dispersed, revealing a landscape of dry rock, brown and grey. I tensed. This was not the golden plain I'd left. The air was thinner, I was lighter. Breath came with difficulty. I touched my chest, suddenly alarmed. The fire within remained strong, but my Earthblade could not grant me sight through the rock I stood on.
"Hey."
I spun, raising my stone, aimed to throw. A coloured beam of light hissed to life in the hands of a young man, not much older than me, with stringy black hair and startled blue eyes. He held the light as if it were a weapon. I backed off, putting myself outside his range—though he was still in mine.
"Sorry," said the man. "Didn't mean to make you jump." The light disappeared with a snap, and he returned a thin metal cylinder like a telescope to his belt. His eyes were wary, his stance on high alert. He wore a white and blue uniform. "Who are you?"
"I'm the one holding the weapon." Although he could probably bring back the light in moment if he had to. "You answer first. Who are you?"
"Caspian Sparks." He watched me. "Co-pilot of the Torrent. Now who are you?"
I pressed my lips together. Time upon time… "My name is Liel. And I don't think I'm from this world."
Caspian raised his eyebrows. "Are you a Blacktron fugitive? An enslaved miner? Perhaps a marooned space pirate or an exile from another world?" He looked around. "How'd you get here?"
I scowled. "Mercurial authors, I think."

I saw your Dare after posting mine, but I didn't have time to respond—the paterfamilias sent me to bed. So I have read it. Now I'm curious as to which part of it is the confidential bit. Thanks! And no thanks; I've been away for 21 hours. Back when writing Rock Planet I knew next to nothing about writing characters—it wasn't until CaC2 that I really started learning about character and dialogue and motivation—so I had to invent a new personality and speech style for Caspian. Liel, on the other hand, is in perfect Liel mode. XD Aside from the final line, which is a breach in the fourth wall.

The mystery shall haunt you til your dying day. >:D Just kidding, of course. ;) It was the gag about the pidgeon. I phrase it much better in the first chapter of my book, and I didn't want to ruin the surprise. *nostalgic sigh* Yes, I think CaC2 was a formative experience for all of us, especially in terms of dialogue and character motivation. :) Lol. It must have been fun to write Liel doing his "Liel thang." ;)

Ah. In that case I can't recall it. Right now I'm really curious—is "pidgeon" an American spelling, or is it a typo? My spellcheck is trying to change it. I think the spelling you're looking for is pigeon. There are only two things which have revolutionised the way I write as much as CaC2. One was CaC2. (Duh.) The other is the One Year Adventure Novel course. Runners-up include the Go Teen Writers book and K. M. Weiland's short ebook 5 Secrets of Story Structure. (That last one is very short, but a fresh take on structuring—structuring being very important in my writing process. And it's free.) I've been writing in Liel's POV quite a bit this week, so Liel's mindset came easily. But yes. It is fun. I've still got a few things about his internal dialogue and decision-making process that I have to think through—they don't feel quite right yet—but I hope to have them resolved by the end of this second draft.

Lol. I think pigeon is correct... don't ask where that d came from, cuz I have no clue. xD Let's just blame it on my uncouth American ways. Or perhaps the fact that I turned off spellcheck. :P I've heard a lot of good things about OYAN. :P Always wanted to try it out, but alas, we never did it in high school. Maybe someday I'll do it on my own. The GTW book sounds like fun as well (I've considered buying it once or twice), but K. M. Weiland is new to me. :) It's crazy, isn't it? We end up knowing our characters so well. In fact, if they weren't our own creations, it would be kind of creepy. :P Can you imagine that level of understanding with another real person? Knowing their past, future, secret fears, thought processes, internal monologue, hidden vices and inner virtues? Knowing exactly what they need to learn?
