Hold on, I think we're talking about different books. Sky Riders was Christopher Hopper's book, wasn't it? Sky Raiders is written by Brandon Mull.

I have not been talking about CH's Sky Riders. I have been talking about Brandon Mull's Sky Raiders. NightBlade, on the other hand, has brought up CH's Sky Riders based on your misspelling of Sky Raiders, Warrior.

Enjoying Search for the Shadow Key. Sir Batson is most definitely one of my favorite authors (if not my absolute favorite)!

There was a review of TSR somewhere that said the characters were not very well played out, and that they were emotionless.
No joke.
Seriously, The Sky Riders is one of the best books. CH's finest work.

Dmitri Pendragon: So I just finished the Beyonders trilogy today. On the whole, I was impressed . . . though I'm sad about the ending. R.I.P. Ferrin. And Drake. And Tark. And so many others. Storm you, Brandom Mull, slayer of characters.[/spoilers]

The Golden Daughter serialization covers are absolutely amazing.

Yes! I saw those a few months ago on Goodreads. My favourite would have to be The Perilous Gate, for the colours and aesthetics. The Crouching Shadow comes a close second—I love the red on green and the dragon-scale background detail.

Has anyone read At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald?

I almost had to in middle school, but I got towards the middle and then literally begged my parents to not make me finish it. I absolutely hated it.

MacDonald's books are difficult for our modern sensibilities. What did you think of it, Leilani?

I just didn't like that it was about a kid dying and I was in middle school. It had nothing to do with it being an old book.

Warrior of Aror : It wasn't my favorite book. But I thought it was interesting. It's been a while since I read it, so I'll have to try it again at some point to give you a better answer. Also: Brandon Sanderson's Arcanum Unbounded is up for preorder. I'm hoping very hard that I can afford it when it comes out.

I haven't read 'At the Back of the North Wind', but I have read two of George MacDonald's other books: 'The Princess and the Goblins' and 'The Princess and Curdie'. They were pretty good, I thought.

Arcanum Unbounded…is almost NZ$26. *sigh* And here I'm holding off from buying ebooks that are NZ$7 or something like that.

Ew. I won't buy ebooks that are US$12, much less one that's twenty something. (I realize that U.S. and NZ money don't equal in a strict sense, but given the context the personal value of a NZ dollar to you is equal to the personal value of an US dollar to me. If that makes sense...)

Dmitri Pendragon: Ouch. I'm sorry. If and when I get it, I'm getting the hardcover. And normally I still wouldn't buy a book that's so expensive, but (A)it's Brandon Sanderson, and (B)it does contain four novellas, plus several short stories, so that's about $4-$5 per novella, which is a good price.

I think the last book I actually bought was the Tide of Unmaking, which was like 3 years ago. I try my hardest to find books in my library system and only buy them as a last resort.

Whoops. I mixed that up. It's the hardcover that is NZ$26. The ebook is nearly NZ$18. Which is cheaper, but still nearly twice as much as I've ever paid for an ebook. (Anne Elisabeth Stengl's Shadow Hand was a bit more than NZ$10.) And really, the only two stories I haven't read from Arcanum Unbounded are The Emperor's Soul, which the libraries in the city have, and Edgedancer. Maybe I should just recommend that my library buy the hardcover. jliessa44: Yeah. That makes sense. Although all the pricing on Amazon displays in USD, so it's kind of a psychological barrier when I check the NZD price and the numbers go up. I've tried changing it, but I can't find a way to do so. Leilani Sunblade: That's another way to go about it—pay a bit more and get the full thing.

Kirenyth Fireblade: I do the same thing- but there's certain authors for whom I make exceptions, either because I don't think my library will get it or because I just want it for my shelves. (In the case of Arcanum Unbounded, my library in NY will probably get it, but the college library will not. And it's Brandon Sanderson.) Dmitri Pendragon: That would work. I hope you can convince your library to get it.

I really hate having to wait a long time for a book I really want to read. Occasionally I'll buy it as an ebook even if my library has it - like if it's reserved and I can't get it right away. Which is not really a smart thing to do, I guess.

jliessa44: Huh. Could be. I'll have a look into that. Thanks! Leilani Sunblade: The library did act on the two other Brandon Sanderson books I recommended to them: The Rithmatist and White Sand. So they have a track record of buying Sanderson books brought to their attention, at least. I have hopes. Aviar Goldeneagle: XD
