Interesting. My sister and I were having this discussion yesterday, because I realized (based on the pronunciation of Aether, which I knew because steampunk music), I'd probably been pronouncing Aethelbald wrong. And then I realized that I was probably pronouncing all the other names wrong as well, so I decided to take it to the UG and see what others thought.

Regardless of the "correct" pronunciation, I generally pronounce every "ae" diphthong according to the Latin Vulgate pronunciation. Which is a little funny, because that pronunciation (similar to the ay in "say") isn't actually a combination of the sounds made by "a" and "e" in Latin.

Cool beans. As far as forms go, we're just using the usual RP form. I'll put it at the end of this post in case you don't have a copy available for easy reference. I do remember that your villainous characters had a tendency to turn good eventually in a lot of the old RPs. Especially the Battle! thread. xD Form: Name: Age: (apparent and/or actual) Race: (for example: human, elf, dragon, etc.) Physical Description: Personality: Main Goal/Motivations: Natural Abilities: Special Powers (if any): Weapons: History:
Thanks! Lol. I tried. I just wasn't very good at being bad. I like to see redeeming storylines far too much.

Ellron Silvertree Oh, good! That's how I generally pronounce it, so thank you for assuring me that it actually has some basis in some language system. xD jliessa44 Yeeaaaaaah . . . And the more interesting you make a villain, the more you want them to have a redemption story.

Yeah, actually I think it makes the most sense to pronounce it that way in English as well, because: The letter "A" makes either an "ah" or an "ay" (say) sound, depending on whether it is short or long (terms I don't exactly agree with but that's not the point lol), and the letter "E" makes either an "eh" or an "ee" sound, depending on the same. So an "A" and "E" diphthong should make a sound that is a combination of those sounds. Which means that the resulting sound should be either "eye" ("ah" and "ee" or "ah" and "eh," without getting to nitpicky about the phonics), or "ay" (say) ("ay" and "ee" or "eh"). Did that make any sense? It makes sense in my head. I enjoy languages, sounds, linguistics, and phonics. :P

It makes sense, yes. And I like your explanation, though I know very little about linguistics.

I pronounce the ae as the a in cat. It is called the ash symbol in Old English and was always pronounced that way.

Interesting. That would make one of the in-book comments about the name Aethelbald make sense, at least . . .

Lol I almost responded to this with a comment about the Latin pronunciation but then I realized I already did xD Hallo, frens and pals. How goes the daily? I myself am rather dandy, though a bit battered from weathering the storms of academia.

I resonate with the academic battering. Last semester's final essay was the most difficult assignment I've ever done. But this week I get a break before summer semester starts. Where are you in your semester/trimester/term, Ellron?

I also resonate with academic battering . . . though tonight, it's technology attacking me. I'm trying to finalize the paperback for Blood in the Snow, and the margins keep messing up, and I don't know why. *dies* Dmitri Pendragon: I find it very interesting that Christmas isn't y'all's break between semesters like it is ours.

I just finished synthesizing alum and I've got two papers due tomorrow on the biology and chemistry nobel prizes, but I haven't started them yet...and two more assignments due Friday along with a Chem test... basically I'm overwhelmed as well. >.<

Leilani Sunblade : Oh, we have a long Christmas break. Technically my tertiary institution's study year starts up again in February. But I'm electing to take the summer semester so I can say I'm studying full-time (and claim scholarship funds), while having the space to pursue my other interests and commitments (writing, reading, ballet, church roles) on the side. jliessa44: Eep. Are extensions a thing?

Dmitri Pendragon Lol. Nope. Just for math, and I might take advantage of that. Gah. I always have at least two assignments due every day and it makes it impossible to get ahead.

Thanks. This first paper is actually interesting. It's about a possible cure for metastasized cancer. The second one... not so much. It's about evolution. Microevolution, but still. ETA. But I'm done! *Happy sigh* it only took me like four hours instead of the one to two it should have because I kept getting distracted.

Have you had fall break yet? Just out of curiosity? Do grad students even get fall break?

I'm doing pretty well. Just finished my junior year of college about a week ago. I got home, unpacked, and then kind of collapsed, but I'm trying to get back to productivity now. That's exciting that you're back in the states! Anything else new with you?

It's been ages since I've written and I've just managed four 10-minute sprints: 69, 78, 68, 119 words. This is the very first scene of my thoroughly outlined work in progress and I have the rest of June as a holiday from study until the next semester begins. I'm going to try and write a whole book in three weeks.

I'm back after a long sojourn into the lands of adventure, anything interesting happen while I was away? Or are things continuing much as they have this past age, full of their own comings and goings, scarcely aware of the existence of Hobbits?

I'll be honest, it's been pretty dead around here. I've probably seen more spam posts than real ones in the last month. But it is what it is. I think school/college and work killed pretty much everyone around here.

Leilani Sunblade: Thank you! No, it's not one you'll have heard of. It's an older-YA or new adult science fiction story about a patriot who joins a group of patriotic extremists and struggles to find the balance between fitting in and standing out. Solo was one of the original influences, specifically the war on the mud planet.
